Interactive comment on “Dissolved organic carbon lability and stable isotope shifts during microbial decomposition in a tropical river system” by N. Geeraert et al

چکیده

The study presents an evaluation of changes of dissolved organic carbon concentrations and their associated d13C signatures in dark incubations of stream water from the Tana River, Kenya. The results show substantial decreases in [DOC] within the first 24 to 48 hours, suggesting strong microbial activity with up to 50% of the DOC being respired. These changes are paralleled by changes in d13C signatures

Interactive comment on “Dissolved organic carbon lability and stable isotope shifts during microbial decomposition in a tropical river system” by N. Geeraert et al

The paper by Geeraert et al. sets out to determine the degradation processes of OC in the Tana River (Kenya), focusing on microbial decomposition. Microbial degradation of DOC was measured in dark incubation experiments, eliminating loss of DOC through photochemical oxidation. It was concluded that bacterial mineralization of labile DOM was significant, contrary to the findings of other studies...

REF: The topic of this study fits well within the scope of BG and should be of interest for a broad range of readers. Its main strengths are the stable isotope approach used to assess the dynamics of biodegradation of riverine DOC, and the fact that the study was carried out on a river with mixed C3 and C4 sources of DOC. The data appears of excellent quality (S. Bouillon is a recognised specia...

Dissolved organic carbon lability and stable isotope shifts during microbial decomposition in a tropical river system

A significant amount of carbon is transported to the ocean as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in rivers. During transport, it can be transformed through microbial consumption and photochemical oxidation. In dark incubation experiments with water from the Tana River, Kenya, we examined the consumption of DOC through microbial decomposition and the associated change in its carbon stable isotope co...
